About Me

Dr. Megan Connell, Applied Game Master and Certified Geek Therapist

About Me

I am a board-certified licensed clinical psychologist, registered with the national registry of health professionals.  I have over ten years of experience as a therapist. For the first seven years of my career, I worked with active-duty military to include a deployment to Iraq.  I completed my graduate training in Hawai’i, my clinical internship in Washington state, practiced for four years in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, in August 2016 I joined a group practice in Charlotte NC, and in August of 2022 I opened Health Quest Innovative Therapeutics also in Charlotte NC. My first book, Tabletop Role-Playing Therapy a Guide for the Clinician Game Master, was published with W.W. Norton Publishing in 2023.

I received my undergraduate training at Berklee College of Music in Boston where I focused my studies in music therapy.  I completed my graduate work at Argosy University Hawai’i where I had the opportunity to work with children from military families, active-duty sailors, and in the local community at the Waianae coast comprehensive health center.  I completed my APA internship at Madigan Army Medical Center in 2010 and achieved board certification in clinical psychology in 2014.

I love helping my clients work through the difficult process of change.  I believe that therapy is a time for personal growth and development and my hope is to give those I work with the tools to grow and develop throughout their lifetime.  Change is difficult and often painful and part of my job is to stand by your side as you make meaningful changes in your life.

In addition to being an individual therapist, I am passionate about educating and empowering others. I love to teach and give talks both locally and nationally. I have spoken about the power of gaming and therapy at several of the largest gaming conventions nationally. I have also presented talks at the ACBS World Convention. When engaging in therapy you will find much of my intervention style includes teaching.  For more information about the different populations I treat and my intervention style please see the Theory of Change tab above.

When not engaged in therapy or teaching you can find me spending time with my family, playing tabletop and board games, listening to music, reading, playing video games, watching YouTube, or painting.
