About
Being heard, being seen, is vital for you. You might have tried searching for help before and have struggled to understand if these people could really connect with you and help you. You want an expert who not only can help you but gets you. I help people by meeting them where they are and learning what THEY want to change in their life.
It can be really confusing trying to understand the different types of credentials and trainings that different providers have. My training is in clinical psychology, specifically focused on applied psychology. What this means is that in my training I focused on working with clients, rather than engaging in research. I was trained in several different settings and have been trained in a wide variety of techniques and interventions.
Following my graduation from Argosy University Hawai’i in 2010 I served as a psychologist in US Army for seven years. While in the Army I received specialty training focused on trauma and PTSD. After leaving active duty in 2016 I started my work in private practice where I have focused my work primarily on challenges related to anxiety, panic, changes in life, depression, trauma, and helping women on the autism spectrum.
Being a geek, or as I think of it, someone who is unapologetically enthusiastic, has always been a part of my identity. Too often aspects of geekdom are seen as problematic. I love playing video games and board games, going to gaming conventions, and geeking out over different fandoms. Being a geek and gamer is not a problem, it is not a symptom, it is its own unique culture. I have been at the forefront of helping other professionals recognize geek culture as its own unique culture. Through my work with Leyline Geek Therapeutics, I have helped to train other mental health professionals on what geek culture is, and how we can use geek culture to lead to better more fulfilling lives.
You might worry that your therapist will not see your online friends as being ‘real’ friends, or that they will view your fan fiction as problematic. I understand the greater geek community, I know the value of these strangers we game with who become some of our best friends, the creative outlet that fan fiction can be, and how powerful you can feel when you cosplay as your favorite anime character.
